Easy Sudoku · 9×9 — rules and practice

Start with a standard 81-cell grid and nine 3×3 boxes. A new game on this page starts on Easy, with pencil notes, undo and explanations on the board. Returning here resumes the game saved for this page. Your regular Classic game on the home page is kept separately.

Where to look first

Choose a row, column or box that already contains many digits. List what is missing from 1–9, then check the other two units crossing an empty cell. Enter a number when only one option remains. If two options survive, leave a pencil note and investigate another cell instead of guessing.

Use hints to learn a deduction

Classic hints mark the relevant cells on the playing board. Look at both the target and the numbers that rule out other options. If a chain of reasoning feels too long, practise naked singles and hidden singles first. Filling all candidates can save writing time, but a candidate is still a possibility, not a confirmed answer.

Build confidence before increasing difficulty

Try recording your own candidates and using fewer hints, then change the level above the board when you want another challenge. Difficulty labels vary between websites. Sudoku-Y does not yet certify each puzzle by the specific techniques needed, so an Easy label is not a guarantee of one particular solving method.
